Peer Support (Bundaberg, Mackay, Townsville and Cairns regions)
ROLE DESCRIPTION
A bit about the role
As a Young Carer Support Coordinator, you play a pivotal role in providing key support to Young Carers engaged in Peer Support programs in the Bundaberg, Mackay, Townsville and Cairns regions.
Your daily tasks include planning and delivering peer groups (in-person and online), undertaking program research and development, conducting Young Carer review assessments, maintaining databases and working collaboratively with the team. Programs are offered online, in schools, and at community venues across the catchment.
Balancing administrative duties and hands-on delivery ensures your close involvement in the impactful innovation of Peer Support programs tailored to meet the needs of the Young Carers under your care.

In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to leverage your experience in community services, allied health, or carer/family peer positions.
Your thorough understanding of caring roles, coupled with evidence-based practices, will be key in providing sustainable support for carers while enhancing their overall well-being and identity.
You will be responsible for coordinating responsive, individualised supports tailored specifically for Young Carers, drawing upon your expertise in delivering engaging and interactive peer support programs to young people.
Demonstrating your proficiency in carer programs, youth support initiatives, and strong organisational and interpersonal skills, including negotiation and problem-solving, will be crucial.
Desirable qualities, such as lived experience as a Young Carer, commitment to understanding Young Carer issues, and familiarity with the not-for-profit sector, will further enrich your contributions to this impactful role.
Knowledge of the Carer Gateway In-Person Peer Support service design and guidelines, familiarity with the CHIME Framework, and experience using the Carer Star will be advantageous in ensuring comprehensive and effective support for Young Carers.
Core Responsibilities
Intake and Registration
★ Utilise the Carer Support Framework and Carer Star to complete assessment and planning;
★ Conduct Risk assessments, including assessment of suicide risk and violence risk, develop action and safety plans to mitigate any risks, providing follow up support if required, and communicating all risk with the Peer Support Practice Lead; and
★ Provide Young Carers and their family with information on internal and external programs/services ensuring referral pathways for Young Carers as required.
Peer Support Group Delivery
★ Lead facilitation of in-person and online Peer Support Groups within your targeted area, including monitoring resource levels and ordering more when required, setting up and packing down venues, and complying with all venue requirements;
★ Adapt structured session plans to meet the needs of each group of Young Carers, creating a safe and inclusive support environment for participants;
★ Create a space where Young Carers feel comfortable to share and reflect on their experiences;
★ Work within the Carer Gateway Peer Support and the CHIME Framework to deliver impactful Peer Support groups; and
★ Utilise your own lived experience (where applicable) to explore topics related to Young Carers and their caring roles.
Group Management and Administration
★ Following a deep understanding of the Young Carers in your catchment area, develop Peer Support Groups of similar size, with Young Carers with commonalities including attending the same school, or caring for the same type of person;
★ Communicate all group allocation information to Young Carers and their families as required;
★ Regularly communicate with Young Carers participating in Peer Support Groups regarding engagement and attendance; and
★ Input all necessary information into Carelink.
Data Analysis, Reporting and Community Engagement
★ Collect and report on data related to Peer Support program delivery, outcomes and program effectiveness; and
★ Prepare regular reports for internal stakeholders, highlighting key achievements and areas for improvement.
★ Build and maintain strong relationships with community organisations, support groups, and stakeholders to enhance the reach and impact of Peer Support services;
★ Collaborate with our Carer Gateway consortia partners (as required) to identify opportunities for collaboration and resource-sharing.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA
- Experience working in community services, allied health, or carer/family peer positions
- Thorough understanding of the caring role, and evidence based, best-practice carer supports that enable carers to sustain their caring role, and enhance their own wellbeing and identity
- Experience in coordinating responsive individualised supports to Young Carers
- Experience delivering engaging and interactive peer support programs to young people
- Demonstrated experience and understanding of carer programs and supports, as well as considerable knowledge of youth support programs
- Organisational and interpersonal skills, e.g. negotiation, problem solving capacity, communication and organisational and planning skills
Desirable skills and qualities
★ Lived experience of being a Young Carer
★ Understanding of and commitment to Young Carer issues and needs
★ Understanding of the not-for-profit sector
★ Knowledge of the Carer Gateway In-Person Peer Support service design and guidelines
★ An understanding of the CHIME Framework – Connection, Hope, Identity, Meaning, and Empowerment
★ Knowledge of and experience using the Carer Star
